Help us find this girl
Margaret Ann Hollis, 5, is shown giving Elvis Presley a kiss at a 20-minute stop in downtown Dallas’ Union Station in 1960, and we want to find her. Here’s the story of our search so far.
• From photo editor Guy Reynolds on our Photography Blog:
On a recent night I went to our hard copy files in the downstairs library looking for a picture of Elvis Presley starring in the movie ‘Blue Hawaii’ to run with a Metro calendar item. I didn’t find one but found the search to be rather entertaining and I unearthed a couple of fine nuggets including this one, shot by Dallas Morning News staff photographer John Mazziotta on Tuesday, April 19, 1960. Part of the story was clipped and taped to the back of the print and I read the lede before noticing the byline: James Lehrer. That would be the Jim Lehrer of the later day MacNeil/Lehrer Report on PBS. It seems he did some time here in his early career before moving to the Dallas Times Herald.
Read more about Lehrer’s story and see a group photo of DMN photogs from the era here.
• From our Metro night editor and quite possibly the biggest Elvis fan in the building, Chris Siron, who is also helping with the hunt:
It’s a bit of a longshot we’ll track down this girl or the people who knew her, but it is possible. I’ve been pushing the news around the Elvis online fan community, and we’ve heard from an author who researched every stop along the way of this train trip. I also got some witness feedback, and we may get more, as a lot of people did come out to see Elvis as he traveled across the country. Folks even came out in smaller towns along the way just to wave at the train.
We’re determined to find Margaret Ann Hollis. Do you have any leads? Email greynolds@dallasnews.com.
