One of downtown Dallas’ largest empty landmarks – the 57-year-old Statler Hilton Hotel on Commerce Street – has attracted the attention of one of well-known Dallas investor and developer Jack Matthews.

You might better know it as the big, retro looking hotel that sits across from downtown’s Main Street Garden park. It’s been empty for about a decade.

Designed by noted architect William B. Tabler, the $16 million Statler Hilton was the most modern hotel on the planet when it opened its doors in 1956.

One is represented here: Our April 17, 1947, front page reporting the Texas City explosion, the deadliest industrial accident in U.S. history, killing more than 500 people and prompting the nation’s first class action lawsuit against the U.S. government. It involved a fertilizer explosion, similar to the fertilizer plant explosion that happened Wednesday evening in West, Texas.
